    Hiya,

So, got a shock from the tank this weekend. Which is weird since I do have it grounded to the outlet. Last night the light went out and I couldn't get it back on. Was about to go back to bed, so didn't worry about it. Get home from work to figure out what was going on and realized the WHOLE system was off.

I have a GIF which everything is plugged into. After playing around with the way things are plugged in, I believe it is probably my protein skimmer. The things 5 years old. How long do they last. It is a HOB system. We are going to replace the electric strip anyway. I have no idea how old that is.

Not very familiar with HOB skimmers but it it's like the larger ones the only thing you have to do is replace the pump and they are usually not that expensive. I don't know if that's possible or not with your particular skimmer.

GFI electric strip? I don't have any experience with them. Usually the outlet can be GFI, or you can have a GFI detector in your breaker panel. In either case, Leakage from hot or neutral to ground should instantly trip it, ie there is no way you could be shocked. I would definitely replace whatever you have for a GFI. Technically, you are supposed to test them monthly and they don't last forever. Much better to be safe than dead.

    Hiya,

It's a GFI socket. Sorry. I've pretty much figured out it is the skimmer. I'm going to take it into Kevin and see if he can replace the pump. If not, I'll just have to buy another one.

Brian's advise is solid, you should be able to get another pump with no problem.

    Hiya,

Kevin looked at it and the pump on it has Reef Octopus's brand name on it. it's not shaped like a lot of regular pumps. This is a HOB skimmer. He's going to check the internet and see if anyone has figured out how to put a standard pump on it or if he can order another one.

As most of you can tell, I'm not mechanically inclined.

    Hiya,

Kevin said they do make a pump for this skimmer so I'm having him order one. It's supposed to be smaller and more efficient. Hoping to get it back on the tank Thursday.
