coralife makes a 2 bulb t5 fixture that is about 9 inches, and the true lumen pro LEDs come in a 12" strip and look absolutely amazing!

In my opinion we are overlooking a very good bulb for softies, lps, and zoos. I have very good results using VHO bulbs on both my softie tank and the sump under the frag system. Everything grows exceptionaly well and the price for a retro kit is reasonable. I think that is a good bulb for this use.

Some of you guys may hate me for this but I've actually been using a regular florecent 50/50 on a 5 gallon that has worked wonderful for shrooms and a leather. I got a trumpet coral about a month ago. It is growing great and its tenticals come out everynight to eat. The shrooms have trippled in size in a few months. I have them high in the tank and haven't tried lowering them yet. I'm surching for some better lighting now. I have been wanting to try a 50/50 florecent screw in bulb and a lamp but haven't tried it yet. I actually like soft corals more than hard so I'm wanting to try xenias again but they didn't make it the last time, the little babies that came up after though are growing good. Alright I'll stop yap'n now. Good Luck!

I used to have two of these 20 watt bulbs running my five gallon and was able to grow sps on the top with no problem, just had issues with my filter splasing water onto the bulbs so I switched to water proof LEDs

If you are familiar with the GARF website, they use a lot of regular flo lights on their "bullet proof" systems

Yes the splashing is deffinatly a problem.  I clean the fixtures and bulbs regularly and try to place the light where the splashes don't hit it as much.  I wanted to put a piece of plexi in there but i don't want to block much light.  I reciently rearanged putting one of my shrooms almost to the top of the tank and I don't think it likes it much.  It is now staying pretty small and isn't spreading out as much.

Only way you cut lighting back is if its blocked with salt creep.
