LOL. Definitely a hot topic. You're absolutely right that without quarantining everything wet you can't be 100% certain. We will have to disagree on how important quarantining fish is.

When you say chances are I have 'it' (which disease do you mean) in my tank I'd love to know how that probability can be calculated? How great are those chances? How did you arrive at that conclusion? To say that quarantining your fish is pointless is a bit harsh and inconsistent with everything I've read by the experts on the subject.

It's like in medicine. You may have a disease that's 100% fatal and the treatment is fatal 50% of the time it's used. Are you going to undergo the treatment? Gotta play the odds. I'm just saying quarantining greatly increases the chances of a disease free fish population. It certainly doesn't guarantee it.

We can disagree amicably. :D I definitely plan to continue do what I'm doing now but appreciate your advice. Hope all our fish die of old age.....in my case that may be after I'm dead!:p

Likewise I would love to know how you came up with percentages. I agree that qt is important but it just means something different to me. My number one goal is to get fish eating and healthy. I probably wouldn't have my multibar if I didn't do that. Some fish it's a must to get eating imo. If I see something I would treat. If I don't then I wouldn't treat. I'm not giving you advice or saying what your doing is wrong. We just have different goals. The fact is that in order to have a 100% disease free tank you must qt everything wet that goes in the tank.

  3. Neither the male anthias nor the royal are showing any signs of sickness right now. Goby looks good too.

    I imagine now it's a wait and see game. 76 days...starting now.

I'd highly recommend a product called selcon, it's been around for a while and I personally feel it's ever beneficial to fish. I'm not saying it's a cure all but I feed selcon soaked nori at least once a week in all the systems I take care of. I feed it daily in QT, even put it on pellets and flakes. A buddy of mine JD in Longview we call the "fish whisperer" swears by it, he regularly adopts/buys petco fish that are sick and nurses them back to health. I've got shelves full of chemicals and snake oils/powders but this stuff I use constantly, I wish they did a little better job of advertising so more people knew.

I was looking up diy frozen fish food the other day and most recipes listed Selco. What is it? o_O I guess I'll go look it up! ;)

It's a mix of vitamins from what I gather, never seen a recipe and doubt I ever will. It's not a fish food, just an additive. It works well on nori because you can soak it and let it dry out. I do the same with pellets and flakes, takes a little extra time but it's well worth it.

Yeah I looked it up and it's vitamins and essential fatty acids and what not. Makes sense why people would add it to fish food recipes. I was looking up how to make frozen foods with fresh fish and shrimp and stuff. Gonna order some!

  8. @LJC6780 , I'd like to hear your take on favorite home frozen food mixtures after you experiment. I've considered the same but haven't taken the time to research options. I'm also going to check into Selcon. Thank you @franklypre

ingredients can be clams, shrimp, white fish from the ocean, mussels, oysters, nori, spirulina, selcon, garlic, etc. Freshness is the most important part in my opinion, just grind it all up to a decent consistency and put it in ziplocs, I like to freeze it flat and thin so it's easy to portion out but you can use ice cube trays as well if you want. I'd still recommend nori sheets and either a flake or pelletized food as it will help fatten the fish up.

Yes, this was pretty much the ingredient list on everything I looked at, in some form or another. Some also chose to buy the frozen fish foods and add to the mix for smaller fish.

I do know that my fish don't seem to care for the larger chunks that are sometimes in the Rod's foods so I usually give those to one of the bigger corals.

I also read about freezing to get all of the air out for freshness, so I guess if you used ice cubes you might want to use a vac sealer to seal each one or they might get freezer burned quickly. I think my parents have one I might try. I think you could probably lay out quite a few as long as they were spaced far enough apart for the plastic to seal in between.. or does it seal? Hmm.

vacuum sealers don't seal individually like that unfortunately, I buy the smallest freezer bags I can. I'm not a fan of the icetray method at all personally.

Yeah, I think I'm thinking the laminator thing! Oops. Yeah. That would be quite time consuming. If you could use them rather quickly it might not be so bad but I rotate foods as it is so I'm sure it will last a while.

  14. Not QTing your fish is like not vaccinating your kids. Now discuss. :p

    franklypre Plankton

if you were wanting to be accurate and "vaccinate" you'd say add all the fish and expose them all to every disease to allow immunity to build. QTing would be like putting kids in a bubble for a few years and then allowing them into the real world

  16. Nope!

It has started pretty much the same location on all 4 fish, just behind the fin. It starts as a small area of raised scales with a little reddening, then turns white, and then the fudge pales and dies. He's still eating the medicated food.

Awe. I hate to hear this. Poor little fish! @SilentReefer corals, my nudi breakout, now your and @huntindoc fish.. seems like there is always something happening in our little boxes of ocean.

Hopefully you can figure out what it is and get it taken care of!
