Just purchased the new 3K gyre from coralvue. I've been curious about the Gyre models vs traditional power heads. I'll let you know what I think in a few days!
If it makes your corals more happy I'm buying one 'cause they look pretty happy to me already! I've thought about replacing my MP10's with one to see if I could get more random flow.
LOL! One of my Jebaeo RW 15's died. Thought I would give a gyre a shot. Twice the money than a new RW 15, but so far I've yet to have a Jebaeo powerhead last past 14mo. Thought I'd try a safer warrenty option.
Yep after replacing several Jebao powerheads I went out and bought a Tunze 6105. I plan on buying 1 more and that new IceCap Gyre
How much is the Jebao R15? At that rate I would have gone through 4 of them. Maybe my Vortechs weren't as bad of investments as I thought.
Seems like the 15 is $70-$80. So far I like the Gyre. It's different.....obviously. I'm used to the flow of a powerhead; flow coming from a small diameter. This enables an easy to produce wave......when pulsing. The Gyre, because flow is distributed across several inches, does not produce the back and forth motion in my tank. Granted, my tank is 4ft in length and the large maxspect model likely has the power to do this. What is nice though about the Gyre is the 'wall' of flow that gets pushed with each pulse. There has been a lot of marketing regarding the undertow or current produced from the Gyre; striking the opposite end of the tank then making a circular motion towards the bottom and back to the starting point. Powerheads do the exact same thing. The difference again is the the large 'wall' effect from the Gyre. Depending on positioning of rock, the Gyre has the potential to stir up more detritus; comparing a single Gyre vs two powerheads. One other note, SPS love flow! There was an immediate polyp extension having the Gyre on. Keep in my I had a RW 15 on a 4ft tank previously, so since it died coral were not getting adequate flow. When I say adequate, they still grew and were colorful. However, hurricane like flow just makes polyps extend the same way warm weather makes birds sing!
