This is a dumb newbie question but what's the difference in a paly vs a zoa? At first I thought palys were always bigger polyps but I have some zoas that are as big as my Magician Paly.

The differences I have noted.....Palys have a vigorous feeding response and close up around food while zoas mouth just opens. The mouths are like a straight line on palys and round on zoas. Skirts usually are longer on palys.

So what does determine if a polyp is a paly or a zoa?

Wow that was a lot more in depth than anything I had read about the subject but it confirmed the way I was taught. I was told sand in the stem= paly. No sand= zoa. I typically call them all zoas though.

They had a big article in coral magazine a few months back about zoas and palys.

It depends. I have a friend that has a lot of different types for cheap but he rarely frags them. When he does frag them the price is cheap compared to online prices. Just like business though, it is all about supply and demand. The market is flooded with some zoas and others are impossible to find. Example- I am looking for " Mint chocolate chips" and I cant find them anywhere locally. Online they are cheap but I would rather buy local. That said, I don't want any more "Captain Americas" but I can get them for less than $5 per polyp locally or $20+ online. I sell Radioactive Dragon eyes and Whammin Watermellons for $1 pp. That is about the same as online prices but I really cant get much cheaper since local doesn't involve shipping cost. I trade Metallic Green star polyps (the super bright ones) for store credit or sell it for dirt cheap too. Again, supply and demand.

Thanks for the link Shawn! Some of my observations were right. Turns out I have Zoas, palys and protopalys all (though the protopalys are going to be moving out).
