I have a hard time keeping my water temp below 84 in the daytime. the room temp doesn't exceed 77 and I keep a ceiling fan running. I have the Coralife PC fixture with two 96W bulbs. The heater thermostat is set at 78 and I never see it come on. I have three Maxi-Jet 1200 powerheads for circulation. Could these be raising the water temp?

  2. The maxi-jet 1200s are rated at 20 watts each. I guess that might be enough to push you over the top when the lights come on.

What do you have for ventilation in the canopy?

Well, I have a small setup with no sump and no canopy. I do have a Remora Pro w/Mag pump which I didn't mention before which is adding even more heat.

try adding a clip on fan that can be picked up at walmart and set it up so that it blows across the surface of your tank and comes on and off with your lights. I have one on mine and it keeps my temp in check easily and i run halides.

I've considered that and may try it out. One of those fans would be cheaper to operate than the ceiling fan (which isn't helping much) and the family would quit complaining about being cold.

  6. I would definitely try the clip on fan. I got tired of listening to my 5 inch box fans in my hood and disconnected them several months ago. I thought that since the back of the canopy was open that they weren't doing all that much good. Was I wrong. I have chillers - so it didn't affect the temp on way or the other but they are sure working more since I shut the fans down. I think that fans are necessary regardless, but next time I will invest a little more and get fans that are quieter.
