Not in a hurry to replace my SCA 301, I think its performing adequate for my newly established 50 gal but plan on getting a bigger one when I starting adding fish/corals.

    What would you guys recommend?

  2. I used to think a big oversized skimmer was the way to go. However, there are many beautiful reef tanks without a skimmer. What does this mean? I think it means they arnt necessary like preached. I run a skimmer, and run it dry, changing my collection cup monthly. I think if your going to run a skimmer, get something undersized, and your less likely to over-skim. I'll also add, the recommendations by manufactures are based on poopoo and marketing. Like everything else, don't believe the hype!

That is what I was thinking too. So maybe I don't need a new skimmer for my size tank. It is pulling stuff out.

What do you mean run it dry? Or over-skim? I didn't think this was possible or bad.

So in your opinion a Reef Octopus Classic 152 - S is probably over kill?

  4. Wet skimming, creates over skimming and is thought to pull out too many nutrients over time. Frequent water changes would compensate for this. Dry skimming pulls out only the thickest skimmate. Everything is on a spectrum, of course.

If what you have works, no reason to change!

I know nothing about the reef octopus 152-s
