Why is my acan sliming?

  1. image.jpg The last three days my Acan has been sliming. The only change has been the sea cucumber introduced and a bubble coral.
    Thoughts?

  2. I'm starting water changes after seeing a little brown slime on my brown Zoas too. And I've pulled the cucumber. He's moving around, but I just don't trust him.

How close is the bubble coral?

Google Brown Jelly disease. Lets hope it isn't that but if it is let me know.

  5. About 3 inches

  6. The mucous on the acan is white/clearish. It's not doing it now after a 5g water change and I moved the bubble coral a little further away.

The brown strings on the Zoa reminded me of the long thin brown strings created by my recordia when they spewed their zooxanthellae. It's not so much a slime as a string. I sucked those up in a tube and discarded them.

Im thinking no on brown jelly disease.

  7. I moved the cucumber to a mesh covered container into the 65g. He's moving slow, but I can't see any signs of stress that would cause toxin release.

  8. image.jpg image.jpg image.jpg Sorry for the haze...Mikey's kicking up a new sand hollow for himself. Right now, everything is looking better. I think I'm going to watch tomorrow and if I see the acan sliming again, I'll do another water change. It's mucous was spread around the tank...maybe irritating the other corals?

  9. I did move the star polyps to the 65g. They were overcrowing the top rock of the tank and shadowing the Zoas below. I wonder, now that they are not getting the shade, if some Zoas are reacting by expelling zooxanthellae , and it just happens to coincide with the acan issue.

When the acan was expanded and puffy, they were about 1" from the bubble. Maybe too close.

I think it may have been the bubble coral being too close. The acan looks very happy in the new picture.

I thought the cucumbers only released toxins when they died? I'm sure someone on here knows the answer to that question.

  11. I think you're correct. This new cuc hasn't shown signs of eating (or pooping clean sand) since I got him. Two weeks. I was sure he was dead! Then he started moving. He makes me nervous.

The brown that you are describing sounds like expelling zooxanthellae to me too. Besides that, everything looks really happy except the Bubble. Actually that is a Pearl Bubble (Physogyra Lichtensteini). It isn't happy in that photo. It may be unhappy for several reasons and when I try to determine cause my first suspect is flow. They inflate more with less flow.

  14. Thank you. I've moved it back center of tank. There's not much sand there. This guy may have to move to the 65 when it's more mature.

The acan has stopped sliming. I think it really was due to the proximity of the bubble.

And the Zoas have stopped spitting. About 20 brown buttons appear a little lighter today. And they would have all been directly shaded by the green star polyps before moving them. I'll keep an eye on them though.

I'll do some more research on the pearl bubble too. Pretty coral.

  18. Mmmmm. My acan is doing that white slime thing again. And mouths are fairly open. And they're shape is really cupped.

  20. I've moved the acan under a little shade protection from the red algae and it's a little more protected from the flow.

I also moved the favia to the 65 g. I'd forgotten I had moved him front of tank after the turbos pushed him under a giant mushroom. (He didn't like that much. )

So maybe the acan had too many neighbors move in at once? Kind of like my country home that now has a giant subdivision past my fence line. I was pretty pissy for a few weeks too.;)

I've given the acan a little shake. He's shrunk back up and has now closed all his mouths.
