Hello fellow reefers I have a few question regarding UV Sterilizers and wanted to get some opinions. I recently purchased an 8 watt Aqua Advantage 2000 HOB sterilizer to put in my sump. It's rated for 70 gal saltwater aquarium and according to the specs it supports: For 70 gal salt 30,000 uw/cm2 at 642 gph 45,000 uw/cm2 at 428 gph 60,000 uw/cm2 at 321 gph 75,000 uw/cm2 at 256 gph 90,000 uw/cm2 at 214 gph My tank is 120 gal. In doing some research I read it's better to undersize these things so that's why I chose to go with one that's rated a little smaller. I purchased a Maxijet 900 (230 gph) and 1200 (295 gph) to run the sterilizer. My question is: is more flow or less flow better to control buggies/bacteria, etc? My instincts say to go with slower flow so the water has more contact with the light, but not sure if that's 100% correct? What are your thoughts on that given the UV sterilizer is undersized for my tank? Thank you!
I'm curious also, just about the using one period. I know there's a lot of different opinions out there. I've never used one or saw the advantage or it but that means nothing n Sent from uh......
I have been using a Aqua Ultraviolet 40 watt sterilizer rated for a salt water tank of 325 gallons. I have a flow rate of around 500gph on a 125g mixed reef with no problems that I can see. It's been running now for about 15 months. Like Shawn stated there are a lot of different opinions out there so here is a web site that might answer a few questions and give one more opinion. http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/AquariumUVSterilization.html#toolargeuv Here also is a few pics of my tank.
