I'm looking for a way to store RODI or mixed saltwater. I keep finding used food grade barrels on craigslist for $20 each. They have all had some sort of soft drink mix or food product in them. Has anyone had any experience with this? I've read online that you can clean them with bleach or vinegar to get the residue out, but I'm scared that I wont get them clean enough and that it could cause problems. Has anyone successfully gotten them clean enough to use for RODI?
I personally use those blue 5 gallon bottles you can find at Walmart (or other superstores). They're specifically made for water carrying. And the lid is a perfect size to get a tube into for your auto top off. But in reference to them having food in them? If you've cleaned It REALLY GOOD. I don't see why it wouldn't work just fine too. Just clean it well. And you shouldn't have to worry.
Cameron, I bought 4 of those exact ones for the same purpose you want. I now use Brute's. It was a total waste of money. I spent over a month tying to get the smell out. It never came out.
I think only paid about $30 for my 32 gallon Brutes and you can get a dolly for them to roll if you want. I might sell some of mine when I get my mixing station set up. Still trying to figure out how I'm going to do it.
yep, best $20 ever. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Milwaukee-1-000-lb-Capacity-Furniture-Dolly-33700/100057209
Hadn't thought of that! This is the one I'm using. It will twist lock on the can. http://www.homedepot.com/p/Rubberma...s-Brute-Trash-Can-Dolly-FG264020BLA/203207009
My brute came with a dolly but it's sold separately now. I'd pay the extra cash for the Rubbermaid dolly. It fits perfectly and won't slide off when empty. I've used the furniture dolly too. http://m.homedepot.com/p/Rubbermaid-Commercial-Products-Brute-Trash-Can-Dolly-FG264020BLA/203207009
I have a few of those myself. I went ahead and used it. I can't say that I've had anything in particular that caused any problems. Still has a lemon-y smell, even after a few years. I don't use it for holding RODI for mixing salt water anymore. I use the RODI water now for cleaning stuff, various additions preparations etc. I also bought some 5 gal containers that have more smell than the barrels did, but I'm not using them.
