I want convert my freshwater 10 gallon tank to a saltwater. So I need opinions on the hang on filter that is already on it, I think its a whisper with a carbon filled filter, will it work with salt water and what do I do with the lights? Right now the hood is made for two screw in bulbs and I currently have a black light and black/blue actinic light bulb in place..Will those help/hurt me.. Any ideas or suggestions will greatly be appreciated... I plan on adding some kind of substrate and using some live rock from my 75 gallon to start the process and also just take water from current 75 gall. and place in 10 gal just to get a kick start...
    Thanks for any info

Is your 75 gallon you reference a marine system?

You can easily run a FOWLR with what you have vaguely ;-) described. Replace the black lights with some "daylight" lights (~6500K, completely aesthetic unless you go with a HO light fixture) and if you are running an established system the LR you add will likely provide enough filtration for a small hardy fish. The HOB filter can be used for something like ceramic rings to increase beneficial bacteria colonies. There are many different ways to configure the conversion. Search the web for DIY nano tanks for inspiration from people who have had success. Good Luck.

Yes the 75 gallon that I refer to is my saltwater tank filled with a lil bit of everything (softies, fish, and inverts) that I have had up for about 1 year.

Nice idea. You probably won't even go through a cycle with bringing everything over from your 75 gallon. I had a HOB filter and I put a chemi pure sock and filter floss. It helps keep my water quality good and polished.
