    Hey everyone,
I will be getting a RODI system shortly (hopefully this week) and wanted to get everyone's take on what salt mix to use. What do you use in your tank and how is it working out for you? Nothing too in depth. I know alot of it is personal preference, but is there really a difference?? I know Greg was telling me about how he loves TropicMarin at the meeting, so that's 1 vote for Tropic Marin.

    Thanks!

swear by Tropic Marine Pro, but just bought 900 gallons of Salinity because of the price (Shawn made me do it).

    HIya,

I also loved using Tropic Marine, but I didn't have a reliable source near me. I try to buy everything through Kevin to support our local vendor's. So I've switched to Red Sea Salt Pro. Corals seem to be doing well and the coral algae is growing almost as fast as it did with the Tropic Marine.

Thanks Kim! That was my next question was were buy. I knew Instant Ocean is readily available locally but wasn't sure about the other stuff. For the most part it seems the 200gal mixes are all around $45-$60 bux with the exception of a few others.

    HIya,

I think the Fish Tank in Little Rock keeps Tropic Marine in stock, it's over $80 a bucket though. You might be able to find it cheaper on line, with possible free shipping.

I use Reef Crystals. I've never used anything else, but haven't had any problems with it.

I've used instant ocean, seachem and Red Sea pro, aquavitro. They all made my water salty. Never had a problem with any of them. Only difference I've ever noticed is amount of residue while mixing from one brand to another. I have a hard time believing any salt mix causes algae issues. Greg just likes Tropic Marin because it's overpriced.

Reef Crystals here. Tried Red Sea Coral Pro for a while but everytime I tried to aerate it over night with a heater to get pH stable it would precipitate.

Mine mixes Calcium 475, Mg 1425 and alk 10.6 @ 1.026. May be why I only have to dose Mg every 2-3 weeks.

That is true. Red Sea says their salt is formulated to use immediately after mixing. I don't really get that either but it did better when I used it about half an hour after mixing.

I have used quite a few.
Red Sea CP was great my calcium was always 480 to 500.

Sachem reef wasn't too bad we used to get a killer deal as a club.

Salinity I didn't care for. I mixed it just like they told me. It smells a bit funky. Always had this weirdo algae while I used it. After I ran out it went away. It may have been those batches though. They make the salt then test it for everything then put what level of whatever chemical it has on the label. One will have 420 calcium while another will have 470. Basically each bucket is different. The fish tank had the same issue.

Oceanic wasn't my cup of tea. Super hard to mix.

Fluval sea was pretty darn good it mixed super fast left no residue.

Instant ocean is a all around good salt for fish and inverts. You could add more elements to get it how you like it with your reef but why bother when reef crystals does that.

Reef crystals always left a residue behind never bothered anything I used a 200 gal box I got from greg almost 1 1/2 yr ago.

Now I'm testing out omega one salt and it's looking promising. It mixes very fast no residue that I have noticed yet.

One thing to keep in mind is that all salt buckets should be rolled a few times to mix the ingredients back up that may have settled while the bucket sat in a warehouse for a while. Do this so you can have a more uniform bucket of salt.
    Just my 2 cents.

Good stuff Whitney. I will only be mixing up 20-25 gal at a time so hopefully my results stay pretty consistent. By "rolling a bucket" what/how exactly do you do that? :)

Put it on its side and roll a few times.

Ok should be picking up RO/DI unit today. As it stands:

2.5 votes (Greg and John. Kim used and loved but no reliable source near her) for Tropic Marin
2.5 votes (Alpine Roush, Reef Junky, and Kim now uses) for Red Sea
2 votes (Alan and David) for Reef Crystals
    1 (Chum) for Seachem Reef

Whitney and Shawn have used it all :)
