Arkansas marine aquarist of the year 2009

Discussion in 'MARINE AQUARIST OF THE YEAR' started by schillerstreetreef, Jan 19, 2010.

  1. Congratulations to Norman Davis (Fisher12) who was presented with the Razorback Reef's "Marine Aquarist of the Year 2009" at the clubs annual Christmas Party. Norman has been an active supporter of Razorback Reef since he joined over two years ago. He has served on the Board of Directors for the past two years attending most every meeting and event promoting the marine aquarium hobby. On a national hobby level, Norman just completed his term on the Marine Aquarium Society of North America (MASNA) board where he worked with hobbyist around the country representing Arkansas hobbyists. As one of our most seasoned veterans he offers his experience to anyone that asks and entertains many of our members in his home so that we can learn from his knowledge. Over the years Norman has delved into almost every hobby that you can think of with great passion, there is nothing that Norman does half way. If you can think of it he has raised it from dogs, reptiles, birds and most notably for the past several years bonsai trees and marine aquariums. These two hobby's seem to have stuck with Norman and we are the better for it. For myself and the membership of Razorback Reef thank you Norman for being such a good friend.

Norman's tanks consist of a 200 gallon mixed reef with a refugium plumbed inline with the aquarium. Equipment for this tank include 3 250watt metal halides with supplemental VHO lighting, a large sump running a mechanical filter sock and G5 protein skimmer, several phosphate reactors, circulation via an Ocean Motion closed loop and a calcium reactor. His largest aquarium is a 400 gallon fish only with live rock tank that is filtered with a pool sand filter, Ocean Motion closed loop and lighting provided by VHO's. His third tank is a 125 gallon softie tank that is maintained primarily by water changes with lighting provided by VHO's. Normans newest edition is his frag system which I think is the pride of all his tanks. These shallow aquariums are completely stocked with growing corals that have been propagated from members, stores and events that he has attended. This system is filtered mechanically by filter socks and lots of live rock in the sump. A protein skimmer sits along side the live rock to help produce a fantastic environment for growing corals. Lighting for this system is supplied by T5's which Norman says is now his lighting of choice. Despite all of these tanks Norman has actually downsized in the last year if you can believe it.

Enjoy the pictures and video of Norman's tanks and pictures - post your congratulations to Norman and let him know how much we appreciate all that he does for marine aquarists in Arkansas.

Congrats Norman! Just wanted to let you know that the 5 head acan frag that I bought from you in September has added 7 small heads on it already. Really some quality stuff. Glad to see you achieve this great honor. Thanks for everything that you are doing to promote this great hobby. May your frag tanks flourish!

I thank you all for the nice comments. Of all the hobies I have had over the years I would have to say the Marine Aquarium hobby is one of my all time favorites. The people in our club are always interested in improving their sysetms and sharing their knowledge with all who will listen. I try to share what limited knowledge I have with anyone and always invite new ideas. I appreciate the club and all that it's members have done for me. With my physical condition it would be impossible to acheive any of this without considerable help from a few special friends like Chris, Blake, Marti, Sam, and Patrick. Not to leave anyone out, I thank everyone in the club for making my little reef one of the highlights of my life.
