Christi's 85 gallon reef

  1. I cannot view the wrasse photo, but they are jumpers. May want to get a screen top. Also, many wrasse bury in the sand at night. May want to look up what you have for best husbandry.

    Great progress!

I have a 6-line wrasse and he came with the tank. He's been in there for "a few years" and never jumped. I do have a screen top too though.

I'll look him up and see if he'd rather have sand. He seems to like this little cave though.

    Here's that pic again.

I did do a lot of reading up on them and only found 1 site that said they needed sand and the others said either no special needs or that they slept in a slime cocoon. I have read that they can be jumpers but I'm hoping that since he hasn't been one that he won't turn into one!

So I am thinking of adding some more fish at some point soonish (in the next month or two) so I'd like opinions. I've asked Vanessa at The Fish Tank and her opinion was that they would be fine bio load wise and would fare better if I add them all at once with lights out. I have a lot of hiding places so I'm really not worried about that. I just realized I forgot to ask about adding a lawnmower blenny too.

    Current stock:
-Black and white ocellaris clown (the best I can tell from researching online. Guy I got it from said they told him it was a Percula but he also didn't know half of what he had.. )
    -coral beauty angel
    -6-line wrasse
-various shrimp, hermit crabs and snails.

All get along well and there is never any aggression. They even swim together happily.

    Additional stock:
    -lawnmower blenny
    -orange and white ocellaris clown
    -banggai cardinal pair
    -green clown goby

Possibly a derassa clam but she thought the wrasse might pick on it.

    Thoughts?

  5. Cardinals prefer schools.

Clowns benefit from nems or something that mimicks like a hammer. Just something to consider if your going for a harem.

    Good list

Not a harem, just a pair. And I've read different things about the banggai cardinals. Some things say groups and some say pairs. I have a couple huge hammers and the clown absolutely loves them and has claimed one as her home. She rubs all over it and pops in and out of it all day and sleeps there at night. It's so cute.

  7. Cardinals are a timid fish. They live in and around caves and overhangs out of direct light. It's more natural for them to be in schools, though like anything, they are sold a singles and pairs all the time. They become more active once the lights are out. I always made a point to add a little food a few min after lights out. This isn't necessary, but you'll elecit a more natural environment and behavior.

So how many would you suggest if not a pair? And what happens to the rest when some pair off? Do they get aggressive towards each other?

  9. Any chance I can get a frag of the dark purple hammer? If so let me know some prices. I already have a bunch of the light green like the right side of the pic.

I bet I could get you a frag! Just to be sure, from left to right there is purple with green tip hammer, green with purple tip hammer (small and light purple), purple with green tip and clown, then far right is all frogspawn. Message me and we can work something out!

  11. 5 or more. This keeps aggression down if present. The pair can be territorial.

It's common to buy one fish of multiple species, but this is not the best for the fish. IMHO. I'm guilty like everyone else.

    Spot on.....
With some species. With others it's imperative to only have one of a species. Fairy, flasher and Halichoeres wrasses are good examples of that.

So this is an 85 gallon display with lots of coral and rocks and roughly 15 gallons in the sump. When would you say I'm fully stocked? I almost feel like adding 5 of those fills me up. And what if I were to just get a pair and let them breed and raise a few babies to add later? They are about $28 each.

  14. Just remember that they are very aggressive.

  15. The purple with green tips on the far left.

Are we talking cardinals or clownfish? If you have a mated pair of clowns in that size tank any other clown is gonna be meat pretty quickly most of the time. Large schools of them added small and at the same time will often peacefully co-exist but 3-5 with one a bonded pair I don't see working.

I don't know about cardinals but raising clown fish requires a separate set up for the fry. They have very specific feeding requirements the first few weeks that simply can't be met in a reef tank. Not to mention they would be quickly eaten by other inhabitants. Raising them is pretty labor intensive but not terribly difficult from what I've heard from others who have raised them. Several good forums for breeding and raising fish on the net.

  17. LOL I read cardinal, but my mind was telling me clown. That's what I get for responding while at work. LOL

I only wanted a pair of each but silent reefer suggested about 5 of the cardinals. I don't want more than 2 clowns for sure. Cardinals are mouth breeders and the male carries the fry in his mouth up to a certain point. I was talking about possibly raising some cardinal fry to expand the group if necessary.

That's doable but I bet you would have to raise them to a bigger size away from the parents until they get big enough to not be a meal.
