Glad to hear it's getting better Mark. I know a place you can get a pretty big frag of that purple stylo...anytime you want it!

  2. Optimism does not count as treatment.......in case anyone thought otherwise.
Turns out the infection slowed, but continues. I'll have to treat with something. Anyone know if the fish tank carries Erythromycin?

  3. Nevermind, I just ordered from eBay. API EM Erythromycin. Brown Jelly is thought to be susceptible to this......we'll soon see.
In general, my stance is ABX should be reserved for real-deal infections. Like a typical ED nurse I think I waited too long!

Man I hope not! Don't be too hard on yourself! Using antibiotics is always a weighty decision.

I've got some children's amox. Lol had to take my son in today for an infection in his throat. :( I wish I could use essential oils in my tank. That's usually what I use for myself.

Not sure it would do anything for infection. My go to's there are rosemary and lime. Or for fungal lavender and melaleuca.

I'm just worried about the oil part. I've heard of some people using melaleuca in a fresh tank but I've never done it. I haven't seen any kind of research or anecdotal evidence that oils can be used safely.

  8. Treated tank with Erythromycin yesterday. Followed packaging for dose. I'll perform a water change Friday.

    Hiya,

    So, how are things?

  11. Water-change performed Friday evening. Came home from work yesterday to find my green slimer and blue-white coral with the disease. The blue coral had a brown in some areas, white in other areas, slime disintegrating it. The slimer had a whiteish slime eating it. The slimer colony was quite large, something like 8-9in by 8ish in. The blueish coral was more like 6in by 5in. Both are now gone. I think I may have saved a frag of each. It also began to spread to my purple monti as they were touching, but I was able to easily break away and save it. Both acros were growing in and through other coral so it's possible that I'll come home again and find more death.

The infection is interesting. It's so nasty that when I grabbed diseased areas of the slimer with my cutter, I could just twist my wrist slightly and break it off. The areas where there were still flesh and nice looking coral were hard as a rock.

Also lost my Reef Pets Ultraviolet. This one was a fluke. Friday, I realized one of my fish had knocked it loose off a rock above the bluish coral. I re-glued Friday as it look healthy. Yesterday evening it was toast.

If anyone is wondering about the Erythromycin, I cannot say anything with any certainty. It's likely that with a large enough dose and long enough treatment time it would kill the pathogen. At this point, it's only a guess as to what causes the infection. My advice is, if you think you have this disease remove the coral immediately or start fragging. If in question, pull it or cut.

I'd start an h2o2 dosing schedule, when RTN or STN or Brown Jelly give me issues hydrogen peroxide is my first go to. It raises ORP which tends to reduce the infection or bacterial bloom.

    Mark,
Remove the infected coral(s) and dip them in 40 oz of tank water with 1 packet of Furan 2 mixed well until dissolved. Let it soak for 10 minutes while blasting it repeatedly with a turkey baster. Blow off as much loose tissue as possible. Do this for about 3 days straight. Let me know how it works.

Man that sucks!!! I'm sorry this crap is nuking your tank. I know we discussed it before but I'd probably do a couple of large water changes over the next few days to hopefully reduce the amount of infection in the tank. Concentrate on sucking up as much nasty stuff around infected areas as possible. Manual removal may at the very least decrease the spread or allow the meds to work better on a smaller bacterial colony.

I found this article also if it may be helpful for you. http://www.reefaquarium.com/2012/coral-diseases/

I'd totally try what John Suggested too.

Peroxide is a no go if you have Lysmata shrimp. They are very susceptible to it for some reason.

  16. I don't have furan 2. Damage was already done anyways by the time I got home.

  17. You would have to see this in person to appreciate water change and sucking up as mush of infection as possible would not save the coral. Sounds like a good idea and would likely help reduce the overall number of bacteria, but doesn't stop the spread.

I can say that I have been successful with my method/experiment but I have not been 100% successful. I know of a few losses. But, this is all experimental. The dosage, time, everything has been trial and error on my part. That is why I wasn't going to post it publicly until I had more trials.

Sorry this happening bro. You can come back over and restock once things get stable and my stuff grows out a bit.

  20. Birdsnest gone. Purple monti likely gone. I'm hoping I've saved the tyree lemonade.

The problem with dipping the coral besides by the time I notice a problem is too late, is these are colonies. That said, I'm basically hacking them into pieces trying to save everything else. I could dip a small frag and try and save it.

Looks like almost entire right side of tank is gonna be toast.
Good news, once this is over I have room for more frags! :D
