So I've been looking up how to make my own frozen fish food. I would probably still buy small stuff like brine shrimp or calannus but I was thinking of making the staple foods myself.

I've looked up several different recipes and hey are all pretty much the same ingredients. Shrimp, clams, calimari, scallops and fish (different varieties). I know I have some fish in the freezer but was going to pick up some of the other stuff at the store later. We have a great food processor so I figured I'd give it some use! I also plan to add seaweed and Selco.

Depending on the size of packaging I will have to buy of each item, I'm sure I will have way more than I can use in a reasonable amount of time. Would anyone else be interested in some home made fish food? All of my fish are fairly smallish (less than 4") so I'll probably dice it all up pretty small. I guess I wouldn't have to use all of each package either but it will only be good in the freezer for so long..

Let me know if you are interested in trying the food or if you have any ideas on how to make it the best it can be.

  2. I would think frozen and vacuum sealed, you'd have a great shelf life, but I'd be interested in purchasing some. :)

I looked in the freezer last night and we have tilapia, orange roughy and flounder (I think) so I could try a piece of each with some of the other stuff I guess and see how that does. We bought those not too long ago but I have no idea how much they cost so I'll have to do a little research there.

I'll probably make a smaller batch to see how well it is liked and if it needs to be changed at all.. I'll definitely let you try some though!! I'm interested to hear how your fish like it too!

So just for fun I shredded up a couple shrimp from the freezer. They were raw pink shrimp and not too big. They were very finely shredded in the magic bullet mixer. I fed the fish and gave some to the corals and then let the power heads blow it all around for a bit to get the majority of it eaten or captured before turning on the pumps. Once I turned everything back on, the skimmer went crazy!! Does this seem normal? I didn't rinse the shrimp or anything and only added some garlic guard before feeding. I've never had the sump foam up after feeding other frozen food so I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong. I may have to rethink making my own food!
