Is mechanical filtration necessary? I think my filter sock is the cause of my hair algea problems, I clean it about once a week or so but it seems like it gets full then the next day hair algea (which I have been battling) blows up...

I'm working on getting a bigger skimmer.

I would keep the filter sock on the system. It not only helps with filtration but helps protect your pump.

Mechanical filtration works best when it is cleaned daily- but who has time for that? Anything it captures starts to break down and eventually causes more nitrates. Many have very successful tanks with no mechanical filters at all. But as mentioned above, they can save all that stuff from going into your pump.

I rely heavily on mechanical filtration. But, I despise filter socks.

    Here is my set up.

From right to left my first reactor is tumbling GFO (phosphate binder) daisy chained to carbon in the second reactor. This ensures that GFO partials don't go in to the system. I change the carbon about every two weeks or, when the GFO stops tumbling. GFO gets changed every month along with the carbon. The third reactor has bio-pellets powered by its own pump. Tho out put of that reactor comes out right by the intake to the skimmer pump.

My sump is a little low. Acclimating fish. ;)
