On my 28 gallon bow front I have room for a hang on the back skimmer and either a hang on back filter or a hang on back refugium? Which would you add and why? I was thinking hob filter but wondered about pH stability without reverse lighting cycle of the refugium. The fuge would also turn over less water because of less flow but figure the skimmer helps to oxygenate the water well enough. Let the great debate begin!

If you can find an efficient skimmer it get's my vote hands down! I've never seen much benefit from my refugium except as a place for pods to reproduce. Most of our refugiums are just too small to be effective. I think that would be especially true with a HOB. I turned my light off in my refugium and pulled the chaeto due to some cyano in there. The light was off for 3 weeks and I didn't see any effect on my pH. My choices in order would be #1 skimmer, #2 filter, #3 refugium.

I agree with David's assessment and order of choice. Aquamaxx makes a good hob skimmer.

    Hiya,

I have a HOB skimmer and filter on my 75. I run chemi pure in the filter with filter floss. I don't track my PH anymore, was driving me nuts. I do track my alk and Mg though. This is the only way I've ever done my reef tanks.
