finaly found a 2nd tank to add to my sump system that fit..... can you say BOOM... yep even the dang sides are tempered ... on the hunt again anyone know if the sides of a 15 High are tempered.???
well the drilling of the 10 gallon went better..... really wanted the space full as best as possible but hey i SUCESSFULLY drilled my first tank
Thats great, I'm glad your project is comming along. Post some pics if you can. It's good to have more members that can drill and plumb tanks. May be a good idea for a workshop sometime.
first off i drilled one of the smaller sides.... i drilled a 38mm (3/4 bulkhead) hole ... i used a regular wood hole saw set and used 1/4 plywood and made a guide hole ... next i duct taped the inside of the tank where the glass would fall... i made a THIN plumber putty dam on the outside next i laid the 1/4 with guide hole on the outside , place a spare 1/4 piece on the inside.. sandwiched the putty and both 1/4 boards with plastic quick clamps... FILLED the hole with water...... TAPED the entire rest of the glass outside with duct tape ( figured atleast the glass would explode into the tape instead of my eyes * Safety first * next i drilled SLOWly and stopped often to dump water in the hole to refresh it clear again.. drill slow.... have a smoke.... drill slow ..... have a smoke...... breath some more ... drill some more... eventually i got the first Happy dribbles coming thru the other side... THIS IS WHERE I STOPPED.... smoked again... poured more water in and WENT SUPER SLOW>>>> so not to chip thru on the backside.. about 1 min later i did a toyota dance .... showed my new circular piece of glass to the wife and danced around some more... i think the key to the smaller 10 gallons is the extra support bracing .. they're thin and less vibration = more luck.
HAH HAH! I have no idea what you're talking about but I can sure relate to having a smoke!!!! Great post! You made me laugh.
Very nice. I'm impressed - I thought about drilling a small tank but didn't b/c of the breakage risk. You're braver than I am. I would also like to see this "Toyota Dance". -PB
Did the 20 Gal not work out? Great work on the drilling. It was very nerve racking the first time for me too.
Maybe if beanhead and I had followed that recipe for drilling Norman might not be less a 200 gallon tank.
the 20 wont sit next to the custom acrylic without some modding to the stand ( big hole cut in side) im not ready to cut out the side of the stand yet and if i am going to do that i might as well have a new acrylic sump made the full length of the underside of the tank or get a 40L or something ... so it got a new home..... sump for nadia's new tank... ( still looking for a SUPER cheap tank for this hint hint ) if anyone has a cheap one let me know please. im working on the 20g also atm... got the half-pipe overflow ready to cut down to size for it soon as i finish my sump.. so far ive wasted : 2" of half of a 5" diameter pipe. a square of 1/4 acrylic about 2x2 and ive broken about 2 8x10 sheets of the super thin acrylic from HD tryin to cut them with a jigsaw. O YA... and about 56070088832 hours reading forums for ideas.... but i have my next project idea > DIY FOAM AND ROCK WALLS
i dont know that im in on the whole LARGE one he has but it sparks some ideas... like a staircase for a Frag tank with premade reef plug holes
glue on the baffles/overflows is set... just finished silicon'n the seams of them... tomorrow we try the water tests
why u wanna ruin my day??? i was gonna water test it tonight too.... thanks for the heads up tho. ok ill proly test fit plumbing this weekend then instead
The toyota dance was very funny. Maybe next time I'll remember that my cell phone is in my pocket and has a video function.
