You should never stir a deep sand bed IMO (over 3 inches). Doing so would eliminate the main reason for having a deep sand bed in the first place (anoxic areas for denitrificatiton) and would be dangerous because of the reasons above.

The regular 2" or so sand beds that most of us keep can be stirred without issues. If you've never done it though start slow. Stir about 1/3 of your bed for a week, then that 1/3 +another 1/3 for a week and then stir the whole thing. I started doing that with my rebuild and my sand bed has never looked so good. Takes about 3 minutes to do.

Any suggestions for tuning in the Skimz monster sm203 protein skimmer?

I seem to create a headache w micro bubbles every time I do a water change, if I shut off the Skimz the micro bubbles disappear.

Draw a line on your sump where your water level needs to be while running and another line when everything is off. Do water change and refill to the line and it should be right or need very minimal tuning. Start up your return pump before Skimmer.

The sump levels marked themselves..between salt and algae

I bought this Skimz during the BRS group buy..I'm happy w it, but now that it's been running for a few I still cannot find anything on fine tuning it after the break in period..I've resolved the micro bubbles w some playing between the Skimz and the overflow standpipe..only this time I thought I'd try and make the Skimz more efficient

Well that was my only thought ... I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with the skimz.
