What is the best skimmer for the Oceanic Biocube 29?
    No hang-ons, please.
    Thanks!

The Tunze 9002 is the current reigning king of skimmers for the 29 gallon Biocube. I follow www.nano-reef.com very regularly, and there is a wealth of knowledge including a lot of people with this tank. These run about $160-175 new, but you can find them cheaper, especially in the sales forum on the aforementioned website. This is the skimmer I run on my BC29, and I'm happy with it.

Thanks for the nano reefing and media basket websites. My biocube has a viewing window in back w/bioballs in that middle chamber. Do I still need a skimmer in place of the bioballs? Just take them out and don't use them????

  4. Many do remove bio-balls, they consider them nitrates factories... you really don't need them, if you have a good amount of Live Rock.

I would try taking them out, (assuming you have plenty live rock) then do some testing & watch.

If you can, might try running some Chemi Pure Elite, which I think is a great product.

Check out this post & read about CPE here... a very very good article on the Product !

Assuming that this is in good condition, this is as good a deal as it gets:

I predict that this won't last long. If you need any help on knowing what to do as far as modifying the chambers, or if you want to see what I've done with my setup let me know. Good luck.

Thanks for the tips. I have ordered the Tunze 2009 skimmer for my 29 Biocube. I have removed my bioballs and it Looks like I'll have to remove the basket/tray from the middle chamber as well??
I am noticing that the water level is dangerously high!! Should I cut off the tab of plastic behind the filter cartridge to allow more water flow to the middle chamber?? I notice that some have made this modification, but don't want to geek out my biocube!
    Thanks!

Those are good links Glenn. The demo video setup is exactly how I've done mine, and it's worked great for me. I have taken the floor out of chamber 1 and put a heater in. I have removed part of the tab between chamber 1 and two making the gap about twice as large, and have removed the filter cartridge. I have removed the floor and the bioballs from chamber 2 and added a StevieT media basket and a Tunze 9002 skimmer. I have switched the factory pump out for a Rio 6HF pump, which is currently the pump with the best combination of output and low wattage.

I run my system with a Sunpod 150W metal halide light fixture, so I don't have the factory top on it. The StevieT media cup in the advertisement is a necessity if you want to run the 9002 underneath your hood, as the normal cup won't fit under there. The media basket is a great addition, and gives you a place to run physical filtration (filter floss), and a couple different types of media (purigen and chemi pure elite are popular). Give me a holler if you have any questions.

You nano guys are starting to get me interested. The things you come up with to keep these small tanks amazes me. I was brought up to believe it's too difficult to keep a tank under about 30gal for an extended preiod of time. Not withstanding the factor of your corals and fish outgrowing the tank very rapidly there have been some great methods developed. (even Chris likes his...Roxanne's....nano.) I believe it's now possible to keep these tanks running for several years at a time. Who has the oldest continually running nano in the club? Would be curious to know.
