I picked up a flower leather on Saturday. It appears to be doing fine. Last night, it shot out thin monofilament like extensions and waved them all around in the tank. Are these sweeper tentacles? Should I be worried about my other corals? I only have softies/leathers. Unfortunately I didn't think about grabbing a camera. They looked a lot like this: ___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___|___ It was pretty amazing to watch it retract and extend. Any ideas?
What exactly are you calling a flower leather. I know of toadstool leathers, finger leathers, kenya tree coral, colt coral but never a flower leather. I am not aware of soft corals (Sinularia's or Sarcophyton's) employing sweeper tentacles so I am interested if that is the case.
Well I did some looking and found that what you are calling a flower leather I know by cabbage or lettuce coral. They are all sinularia's by any other name. I didn't find that they have sweeper tentacles though. If you find anything on that let me know.
Yep, I'm pretty sure most people call it a cabbage leather. It looks like there are small "tubes" coming from underneath the coral. I don't know if it's part of the coral or if it's another worm type thing living on the rock. Have you heard of any kind of worm that does something like this? -PB
I don't know that you will have much luck identifying the specific tube worm that it is. typically tanks will become populated with small white tube worms that just start poping up out of your substrate. They come as hitchikers on live rock and corals like you have experienced. There is nothing bad about them at all.
Well, as long as they're not harmful, I guess it's okay. They just don't look like any tube worm I've ever seen or heard of before. Their extensions are over a foot long.
I have heard of Vermetid snails that send out mucus strands that long. I have the common small red tubed vermetid's in my tank and their strands are only 2-3 inches long.
I'll try to in the next couple of days. I have a few tests this week before spring break so time isn't a luxury right now. =( What is the best way to post photos on here? Photobucket?
photobucket or use the gallery that we provide for our members. it can be found at http://www.razorbackreef.org/old/gallery/
