I have had 3 seperate pieces of frogspawn die? it leaves a little mushy on the skeleton and thats it. ?? Please help before any thing else is lost.

i think the first 2 where lost b/c of shipping a couple weeks ago, but i noticed that a branch off another melted last night. it was fully extended the day before??

is it close to any other corals? is it on a piece with more heads? more info is going to help alot here but the first thing i would do is frag off the bad head asap and get it out of the system.

None of them were close to anthing else. The last one that died was on a piece with more than one head but the others were not. frag off the bad head? there is nothing left but a the skeleton? do you think it is a disease? Water has been a little on the cooler side sometimes down to 77 with lights out and 80-81 when the lights are on. should i add a heater for the lights out time? I thought 77 was an okay temp?

water is good, did a water change at the first of last week.

I keep my water temp 77-78 degrees. Especially with the new chiller I have going.

My water temps were all over the place before I got a fan. I doubt that was it. take some water to NSA and have them look at it.

I have a fan that comes on with the lights, which helps it from over heating. I thought 77 might be getting a little chilly?

I had my water tested at NSA the weekend before the water change and the nitrates were 20. they said a water change and cutting back on the food would help the nitrates. I had lost 2 of the frogspawn 2 weeks before, at that point I blamed it on shipping? what's brown jelly?? could that be the culprit? It's weird b/c all the frags that have died came from the same place. I only have one head left. the other head was lost yesterday. so maybe it was just a bad batch from that store? I just don't want it affecting my other LPS. and if i can help it, loosing the head left on that one. everything looks great, fully expanded and everything?

I was more concerned with the temp being to high 86 or so. Your temps seem fine although you do have a bit of a swing going. Sounds like it had brown jelly from the source you bought it from. You can do a lugols dip, that well stop brown jelly sometimes, it did in a hammer I got several years ago, and I think I caused that by letting it fall over and tumbling down the reef rock. Your right in that once all you have left is a skeleton there is no reason to worry. I doubt that it well morph to other lps as it usally stays on the infected coral is my experience the one time I had it. If you lose the last one, I have some frags that are real nice I'll make you a good buy on.

I had one die about 6mos. ago & I think it was from my blue leg crab. It had been on it for a couple hrs. before. I went to bed then in the morning it wouldnt bloom then about 2 days the head was dead.

Brown Jelly is a bacterial infection that can be caused by a large number of things that include lack of water flow, detritus build up, hermit crabs, sea urchins, nitate levels, bristle worms, some snails, even some fish. All it takes is one injury to that head or colony of coral. You may want to start with possible hermit crabs crawling on the colony or maybe not enough water movement to clean the coral of detritus that may have built up. I would not worry to much with the temp. swing. My tank has a 3 to 5 degree temp. swing and I have not had any problem that I could see. Hope this info helps in some way

I didn't realize you had this coral so long, I thought you had just got it. Sam is right that anything that damages the coral can cause it to brown jelly. There evidently is somrthing in the tank doing damage, you need to determine what. As for temp. I was more concerned with to high can cause lps to brown jelly. As for swings it isn't any big deal as long as they don't get to high, but having said that if you can keep the temp more consistent, it is better. Mine swings about 1 deg..

Thanks Guys. I do have an over abundance of large bristles....and I have seen them crawling on my corals. I also wonder, could too much flow cause problems? I have 2 korolia #3 along with my returns.

Fishermann, when I find the culprit, or fix the problem, I would like to buy a few frags from you.

I'll keep a closer watch on things and see what I find.

IMO I do not have mine or the frags from the mother colony in alot of direct flow. You don't want them to get covered with detritus but they don't like being blowed around either. I have alot of current in my tank and have the frogspawn on the bottom and tucked in coves, you can see it in my pics in the tank [Johns Searcy setup] forum underneath the Naso tang. I have some 4&5 hd frags in similar little coves in the rocks. They get indirect current with very slight movement. I wouldn't think high current would cause the brown jelly though, I would think the heads just wouldn't flower out as much in to much current, which in turn could be why things are crawling on them as I have never seen anything on mine. Normal little bristle worms shouldn't be a problem, might be another worm in there that is not good though. Look with a flash light in the middle of the night.
