Just got a Green Bubble Tip Anemone from Sam.

Got home acclimated for about an hour or so and put him in the tank. The clownfish dove right in!  And Sam you'll get a kick out of this, not more than 5 minutes after it was in my tank it had moved off of that rock and into a crevice on the rock pile.

Anyway it was time to feed the eel today, so I got a silverside, defrosted and held it in front of him with the tongs same as always. He wasn't quick enough! The female Maroon Clown came up, snatched the silverside and ran it to the anemone.  The anemone had completely covered it with tentacles in under 5 seconds.

I know they eat silversides, but this was a large silverside prolly close to 3 inches long. Will it cause a problem with the anemone?  I can't get it out of the tentacles regardless, but will it?

Also the anemone is turning more brown. His tentacles are inflating and he is moving of his own accord ( the crevice he found shelters him from the clowns at least a little ). Is it normal for them to lose some color when they move to a new tank?

    Thanks for the help!

  2. I have really enjoyed my anemone that I got from Sam about 3 months ago and yes it changed colors too. This is largely a result of the different lighting conditions that you have as compared to Sam.  My anemone lived in the back of my tank for the majority of its stay in my tank since I got it but after I aquascaped my aquarium I moved him to the front giving him a much less green hue than he had at the back of the tank.  This is due to the fact that I have a single 105 watt PC that has 4 loops on it, 2 actinic in the back and 2 daylight in the front.  The blue in the back brought out the green in the anemone much more than the fuller spectrum light that it gets in the front of the tank. This is a good thing to keep in the back of your head when purchasing any coral, especially SPS. Corals that you purchase under one light will look different under another, it is best to find out everything that you can when purchasing a coral.  What light it has grown under and for how long, along with the tanks salinity and the corals over all condition.

I think Chris answered your color question. As to the silversides, I feed mine sometimes 3 or 4 at a time. Even the large ones they have no problem with. I have found (from fish encounters) that they will eventually release any part of the food item they can't digest. Just remember, the more you feed them, the more they split !!!!

ok i figured the color was a light issue

The clowns love the anemone, but now they are showing the more aggressive side of themselves.  The female attacked the male anthias last night and tore one of his fins.  They are without a doubt coming out of the tank now.

You were right though Norman, they have not gone more than a foot from the anemone since we put it in there. Even feeding time, they wait for the food to get blown close.

I tried to tell you those were some mean fish. Glad you like the anemone.

yea I was warned, they haven't been that bad until we added the anemone though.

Went home on lunch and the anemone had moved some so now it is in part of the tank that doesn't get as much traffic. Shouldn't have any more problems with the aggression ( hopefully ).

Warning:DO NOT target feed the anemone that you got from Sam, unless you want to breed them. They are like Grimlins. The one I got split  and looks like it is going to split again. They want to set up shop on my favorite corals.

on that subject, how many can you have in a tank?  If I were to propogate them, how many could I store for lack of a better term in a 20 or 30 gallon aquarium?

I guess it depends how clean you keep your water. The inch per gallon doesn't even apply to fish if you keep the water clean. I would think they would stop splitting and growing in size if they were crowded or unhappy. They like a specific flow and light too. They can't all be in the same place in your tank and will move. My understanding is if one dies it can spoil you tank and you can lose everything.

If you start propagating my anemones I'll have to charge a royalty fee LOL. Just make sure you don't have any corals in the tank with them as they can kill them pretty easy. Why do think I got rid of them. But back to the question at hand. I would only keep about four in a tank that size as long as you have very good water quality. From what I have observed there are two reasons for anemones to split -plenty of food or very unhappy due to a change in the water, light or flow. And if it is moving it isn't happy.

Why would you possibly want to stockpile these anemones. Quantity is not always a good thing. If you're going to "breed" anemones, get the RBTA or even the new mini carpets and give that a try.

    well....

I thought they were the second in line behind the rbta as far as desire to own one. Apparently not my bad. Either way, once the site I'm constructing is finished, I plan on selling corals so why not carry GBTAs as well.

If there isn't a demand for them then I most likely won't, but like I said, I thought they were desirable.

And once the camera battery charges, I'll take a pic and put it up here.

I have always wanted a nem, may get one one day in my new RSM 250, once the tank matures.

If interested RS has a great nem club with lots of good info on them.

We've had 5 in the store since I worked there and are finally down to one, so not so much of a market around here I don't believe, but online  you never know.
