Heaters can explode in your tank

Well as some of you may have heard I had a heater explode in my tank last night and shoot through the side of my aquarium. I had never heard of this happening but it can. I gave reef member Bigman as much coral and live rock that I could save. I still have a few fish trying to survive but I am unsure of their fate as I am unsure they received a pretty good jolt. Just a warning to members that if you use a heater be very cautious, they can cause you lots of headache if they rupture.

Bigman can't take the fish???? How about a store??? If they are still alive they should be okay. Sorry about the heater, can't say I have ever heard of that in 30+ yrs.

I use Ebo-Jager, have for years and have had very little trouble, I think one quit once. One thing you all might want to consider is using 2 or 3 heaters to make up the watts you need. I have 3 heaters in my sump to heat my 240, that way if one sticks on or quits it takes a lot longer for things to go haywire and you usally well see a slight change on the thermometer either higher or lower, as it is just part of the total watts. It also spreads the load out instead of putting it all on one heater whichseems to make them all last better.
Bigman - were you able to find a place for the fish???

  7. Wow - so sorry to hear... what a bummer! Thanks for sharing - one brand I won't be buying.

my qt tank is empty if you need a place for the fish.

  9. It was a glass heater right? I read a post that said...

I think it happens when they get a leak, and the hot water inside turns to steam, and the steam pressure shatters or blows them up.

That's another reason why I only get the plastic Stealth heaters now - no glass to crack, shatter or blow up!

Can't believe it blew a hole though in the side of the tank... I am sticking with my plastic Stealth heater too.

Glenn I have had glass heaters crack from me banging them around and not knowing it at the time and finding them later with condensation inside, never had one blow up.

Well thats one way to get a bigger tank. Hate to see that happen to your tank and just have to give all the stuff away. I hope this doesn't put you out of the hobby.

I was unable to take the any of the fish at the time. In a rush to get home to get everything back in water I ran ASAP. I called back the next morning to get what fish I could take and they had already been laid to rest. The main reason I could not take the fish is that I had just added a new FoxFace to my tank that morning and did not want to add that much bioload all at once. I could not put anything with my eel. I do not have all of the equipment to get my QT kicked off just yet. I tried though.

Sorry to hear that! Are you going to be replacing just the tank or upgrading?

I wish I found out sooner because I could of held your fish. I have a 90 gal running with only 2 damsels. I also live in Hot Springs. Sorry for your loss. I hate it when fish have to die, as we all do!

I had a glass heater bust in my sump this morning. done with them, or at least the hang ons. I'm going to put a submersible in it this afternoon. My own stoopid fault though. I had some phosphate sponge over the slot in the divider so my input side was about 3 inches higher than my output. I pulled the sponge and the water immediately leveled and hit the hot glass.......sizzle sizzle pop!....gives me an excuse to upgrade. really shouldn't use a hang on in a sump I know...the water level is supposed to be really high on them and it was not, I've already given myself the lecture so .......

Jason I use ebo-jager, have for years. They are glass and I submerge mine in the sump. However you go, try splitting the watts into 2 or 3 heaters, that way if one sticks or fails it won't make a large diff. right away and kill stuff.

since I need one fast im just gonna grab one from walmart this afternoon. Later I'm gonna pick up a couple 150 watt submersibles for the very reason you stated.
