    Hiya,

Okay, I think I've convinced myself to go LED on my new tank. Those that have made the switch, can you tell me what band you got and if you like it.

I'm planning on getting a 120 gallon and having Kevin make the stand and canopy, so it would really help me if you could tell me if the system you are using can be incorporated into one of his canopy or if this is something that will have to set on the top of the tank on legs or hung from the ceiling...which will be hard since we have a vaulted ceiling.

    Thanks Guys and Gals!!!

I've been saying for over three and a half years now, if you can afford LEDs take the plunge. It does not matter which unit you go for, just pick out the features you want with the color combination your looking for. You will want to pick a unit with an optic that will perform to whatever your planning on housing though. The LED units on my tank use Luxeon rebel LEDs with no optic, so basically they're terrible for marine aquarium application, yet I've been able to grow anything I want. I'll say again too, LEDs have the best "color" when compared to any other option. You won't be disappointed!!

    Hiya,

Thanks for the input. I can pretty much afford them now, at least I think, I just don't know much about them. I'm not good with stuff like this, which is why I'm coming to the board for help. All this info is sooo overwhelming that I need help with it being broken down into english.

What do folks think about the Marinland Double LED light for reef tanks. The price seems very reasonable. Though, I can't figure out if it can be hung or mounted.

I've only heard bad things about these for reefs. I've got one on my planted freshwater tank and I only have low light loving plants in it.

It uses 1 w white LEDs & .06 w blue LEDs. This is too low wattage for a tank your size plus the spectrum is too limited. You need to be looking for units with at least 3 w LEDs and a variety of colors.

    Hiya,

Another question, and this may be personal preference, but should I do 50/50% white blue ratio or 2:1 blue white or 2:1 white blue ration?

Marine depot has the Orphek there is some more out there I will have to look through my bag of goodies. We got so much stuff Cory looked at one also but I think it was the Acan You don't need it as long as your tank you can go a little shorter. The Orphek had a par off around 450 20" under the water. Some of the lights you have to buy the controller separate and that also cost.

I have read mixed reviews on orphek. Saying that it put out a blade of light instead of a dispersed one. Heard it burned up corals. Also heard that it was good in some tanks. There's an article on reefbuilders.com about it.

That is with out the optics on the LED they use the same 3watt LED's as most makers it is how u drive it and how high u put it from water. The acans have the same issues if you drive it to hard and have it close to the water there is 3000 par at 4" from light and about 1500 just below water. The 1 watt fixtures are not strong enough to get good par below the water level. You can not run the 3 watt lights at full power. I talked a long time to a rep. about this and he has the acan 600 on all his tanks but he ramps them up and then back down to simulate the sun rise and sun set.

The other nice thing about the Orphex it has UV bulbes that feed the corals. Here is how the guys at the booth recommended how to set them.
    0700 – Turn on moonlights at 10%
0700-0800 – Ramp up intensity of moonlights from 10% to 100%
0800 – Turn on white, red, and UV LEDs at 10% intensity
0800-0900 – Ramp up white, red, and UV LEDs from 10% to 80%
0900-1800 – All LEDs on at 80% (or whatever intensity you desire)
1800-1900 – Ramp down white, red, and UV LEDs from 80% to 0%
1900-2000 – Ramp down moonlights from 100% to 0% (or whatever night time intensity is desired).
Individual channels can all have different intensity levels as well as program times.
