I'm considering a new 120g tank. In planning for a new tank, how do you decide what size pumps to get? What size overflow plumbing, sump, etc?

  2. Depends. What do you want to put in it?

My regal and yellow tangs, royal gramma, whatever corals MHs will support, an anemone and clown fish and maybe a small school of chromis. You know, at least one of everything. :)

  4. Yeah, the complexity you're willing to tolerate will also be a determining factor. And, as below, you'll find that noise goes up significantly with pump size. Also, are you planning on having a sump?

Hey, Tim, been shocked by your Seio yet? Hehehe . . . yeah, I learned the hard way. I avoid that company now.
But about your mag-12 . . . is it sucking air? It'll eventually burn up if it is. Getting a taller sump and increasing the standing water volume would be a fix. Not sure how practical that would be for you.

Anyway, Joe, I know you're made of gold nuggets just like me, but I would really look into these guys: http://www.ecotechmarine.com/products/vortech.htm These have a lot of advantages over closed loops. The initial outlay sure is high, though.

Actually for practical purposes, I'm probably going with a 90g. 48x18x24. Reef-ready overflow, yes. Sump, yes. Probably will supplement flow in the tank with powerheads if necessary.

Ha! Cool idea on the pump design but $345? For one? Wouldn't several of these be needed to produce a lot of random water movement?

  7. The controller is supposed to be available in a few more months. With a controller, I would think in a 90 two would be fine and one would be sufficient. Without the controller, I would use two, one on each end and point them at each other.

Though for $350 you can buy a wavemaker and a bunch of maxijets. For your sump return, maybe you can take a listen on some of the pumps at the lfs? That way you'd have an idea of how loud it gets.

  8. What do you think about building your stand and hood at an upcoming meeting as a DIY project. I do not think that it would be a problem at all to build your stand in an afternoon if all the planning is done before hand. I have all the carpentry tools that we need and I am sure that members would like to see such a project done. When we did the acrylic workshop we had a really big turn out. Not to mention it would save you alot of money. With MACNA next month and the Splash 2006 event in October it might not be until the November meeting but you would certainly save alot of money and it would be such a great project for the club.

Sounds great to me. Obviously, I'll buy the lumber and sundries. We can take a lot of pictures or even video tape the process for the web site.

I may have my new tank funds available in early September. Of course beggars can't be choosers but I was hoping to setup the tank in late September.

With the stand design you have, does the tank frame color matter? I was looking to get a medium oak tank/stand to match my other furniture.

  10. There is no specific tank design that I have - so if you want something special for a particular look or whatever wood you want to use, just let me know. That is what I think would be worth building your own is that you can do whatever you want.

That seems like a good price. Thanks for the link.

Well...I'm ignorant when it comes to any type of woodworking but I do have a couple of guidelines:

    - The stand doesn't need to be too tall since Kathy and I are both vertically challenged.

    - I'd like the color to be a medium oak to match our other living room furniture.

    I think that's about it.

  13. Funny thing . . . I meant to link to the EVC Tech retro kit. But they're actually the same price. I don't actually know anything about the DY ballast. There are several ballast for sale there.

in reference to the stand and canopy build........why does it have to be a regular meeting day. We could have a workshop on any weekend of the month. We do this in other clubs I'm in and it gives the members more time to interact and learn.

I agree although the last weekend in September is my first available.
