Have you tried feeding them? What kind of lighting do you have on the tank?

According to wetwebmedia.com, star polyps like a lot of light and flow. How often are you doing water changes? You shouldn't need to supplement much if you do regular water changes.

Some folks call them weeds and others (like me) can't get them to grow at all.

Starr polyps do great under high light and moderate to high flow. Mine were very bright and growing well up under my MH, but there were some zoos on the same rock that couldn't take the light so I moved the rock lower in the tank. The zoos are recovering, but the starr polyps are changing to a lesser green color and not as vibrant. May have to split the rock and move them back.

mine do good with higher calcium. when you say good for alk what was it exactly? if your calcium is low then the alk may be on the lower side as well . depending on the salt mix your using you could do a couple of water changes and get the calcium back up.

    Powerhead....

This was one of my first corals and now I have several frags of them. Mine stayed closed alot in my 80 ga. Then I moved them a little higher and directed powerhead right over them. They took off and spread like crazy.....too much actually. :) The Starburst Polyps retract as a defense mechanism also, so if you have a fish that is picking at them, this may contribute to them staying retracted. Mine always open up about an 30 mins after the lights come on and retract when the lights go off. Also, have you been doing frequent aquascaping in the tank? I may be wrong, but it seems like these stay open a lot more when you stay away from them in the tank.

I can attest to the fact that they like good flow. I always thought they were being beaten, but it seemed to make them stretch out even further. I don't mean point a Maxi-Jet strait at them like you are blasting them off the rock.

The fish nipping could be a good possiblitiy. Do you have any potential nippers? Could you give us a list of fish in your tank? Also, do you have any notable problem inverts crawling around?... If you found Star Polyp eating nudibranches.... I WANT SOME!!![IMG][IMG]

No really, take a look at the coral in the middle of the night after the lights have been off for a while and see if you can see a potential predator.

  14. Are these some of Norman brown star polyps? I know that I have seen Normans star polyps spread without ever opening and this seemed to be in association with a decrease in light when we changed his hood lights resulting in 4 less VHO's than were there previous. I am glad that you ask this question because I have some of Normans polyps and they are opening well but I want to avoid them not opening. It is interesting to me that the seem to continue to grow at the same rate whether the polyps are out or not. Maybe I should say they spread at the same rate. Keep us updated on any changes - I am very interested in your conclusions.
