What Hang On Skimmer is the best?

Discussion in 'Equipment' started by smallreef2000, Jul 29, 2007.

  1. What is the best Hang On Skimmer on the market today. I am looking at either Aqua C or Deltec. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I like my Remora Pro -- easy to adjust and reliable. The Coralife needlewheels really pull out more black gunk though.

I believe an of those three would be a good choice.

Can anyone comment on which ones are quieter than others?

The Remora Pro is not silent but not noticeably loud either. I've not used the others. My bros Coralife seems very quiet.

the coralife is very quiet, but I think discharges too many microbubbles to be a hang on, should be used in a sump IMHO.

Yes, I have to agree with Fisher. I have one too and they discharge way to many bubbles to make me happy for a hang on. Excellent for sump tho. They seem very quiet and pull out some DISGUSTING stuff.

Reason I ask is that I was kind of toying with the idea of making the 92 corner tank in my living room a FOWLR. I bought the tank a couple of years ago with the intention of it being a reef but it was just too loud having a tank with a drain to a sump in the living room. We are looking for dead quiet operation. I tried every trick in the book but the water noise was still there.

I am not crazy about the idea of having a skimmer in the tank itself but I have been told the new Tunze 9005 is really quiet and works great. It is about 4.5" square. The tank is big enough to where I think it would look OK.

FOWLR's seem like they would be a lot of work if you think about it. In a reef tank there are all kinds of critters (corals, macro/micro algae, clams, etc.) to use nutrients in the water, but with a FOWLR there are only fish to foul the water and hair algae and skimmer to pull it out...

Put a downward pointing elbow on the inside of your overflow to help silence it.

A DSB in a FOWLR tank should have the same fauna as a reef tank, right?

I did the durso thing. The overflow itself wasn't the problem. You can hear that water running through the PVC no matter what you do. I got it to where it wasn't too bad...but then turn on that ASM G2 and it was out of the question.

I was only pushing about 300 GPH through the sump. Does low flow through an overflow cause it to need more air to run through the pipe? There was a LOT of air coming down the drain. I have read that the higher the flow the smaller the air hole needed in the durso to make it stable.

I guess when I say FOWLR I am still planning on having lots of little feather dusters on the live rock, and various forms of macro growing in the tank, shaving brush, etc.

So should I try the overflow again?

Yes low flow can cause more noise. If you bump it up it may quiet down.

OK. Here is my plan. I cannot take credit for this idea as I got it off the net.

Put a gate valve on the 1" drain to slow the flow down. I know that will make it dead quiet. This comes with a price...danger of overflowing the tank. I will protect the inlet to the drain really well against snails and I will use the 3/4 bulkhead normally for the return as an emergency drain. The 3/4" drain should handle my 350 GPH all on its own with no issues. So that should make me sleep good at night.

The return will come over the top of the tank.

That combined with the Tunze skimmer should be one quiet setup.

    Thanks for the input!
