Well, I purchased a used 29 gallon bio cube. Had new lights installed and am now trying to decide where to put it in the house. What I'm wanting to know is should I go with white or black sand? I've always used white and I'm intrigued with the black, but was looking for some comments.

You could have alkalinity issues with black sand. I do love the look but I don't think it's worth the trouble.

That's the kind of info I need. White sand it is then.

I'm looking into how to set up the filter system in the tank. Does anyone use their sponges or did you remove them and use another filter medium? I've never had luck with sponges. They would raise my nitrates...which I know is my fault for not keeping them clean. I'm thinking of filling the back chamber with rubble, a chemipure pouch, but I feel there's something else missing.

Rubble and Chemipure is what I use in my pico. Agree with not using the sponge unless you are OCD enough to clean it often!

Do you put your rubble under the chemipure? And do you put the rubble in a bag?

I put it in the bottom chamber and the Chemipure on the top. I don't put it in a bag. Makes it easier to rinse the debris out of it during water changes.

Thanks!!! I'm going to be setting up it today. Hopefully I'll have some pictures to put up today.

So, I have have the tank set up. I'd take some pictures but it's milky right now. I used a finer sand in this tank from my 75. Put rubble in the back chamber. I forgot to buy the chemipure bag and some filter floss. Figured I'd run a little in it to help it clear up the water. Also got another korella to move water, but the pump that came with it seems to be working great. Also used about 10-15 lbs of the original rock that came with it. Didn't rinse it so there should be enough dead bacteria to start the cycle.
