So I've been reading good things about acropower, and decided to order a small bottle. I was wondering if any of you use it, or have used it, & what are your personal experiences?

I researched this and decided against it. Lots of mixed reviews. Some guys with some gorgeous SPS rave about it and others say they notice no difference. The only thing that is consistent is that people did notice a tendency to develop cyano and algae outbreaks with its use. I think if you have a low bioload and no nutrient issues it may be helpful. I have a realitively high bioload and don't have a ULN tank so I don't use supplemental amino acids.

I think I've got a pretty low bioload for my tank size. I've only ordered a small bottle. I'm going to see how that bottle goes, and will for sure watch out for the algae outbreaks. I know there isn't a magical bottle to make things grow, but I was thinking that the amino acids might be a good thing for the tank.

Just added my second dose. I'm adding 20ml once a week. All my corals are looking good. All my sps are showing good polyp extension. I've got a green slimmer that seems to be benefiting. It was in my smaller tank, and had browned out with almost no polyp extension. It has now started coloring up and showing good extension. I also have some browned out monti's on my frag rack that are slowly gaining color. I may post some photos, but I'm still trying to learn how to photograph under my radions. I'm using the reef radiant program, and it runs pretty blue most of the day.

I know it's early, but so far I'm happy with the acropower. I haven't noticed any algae outbreaks or any negatives yet. But it is only week 2.

Interested in how this turns out for you. I have no fish in my tank (eh...bit of a kick-off reboot) and I think I need to do a bit more with amino acids since I don't have fish poo fertilzer. In the mean time I've been going nuts with phyto and cyclops. Probably creating a nutrient problem since my frags are small.

  6. I used it a while back. I got cyano within a week of starting it. To anyone trying I would suggest a 10th of a dose and slowly increase. I'm interested in trying again to improve polyp extension in some of my acros.

So far all I've noticed is a slight dusting on the glass. I don't know if that's because of the acropower, or something else.

LOL, it sure can be. You ought to see that little purple stylo frag you gave me!

  11. I gave acropower a shot....again. Really wanted it to work. I thought I saw improved PE; Same PE since stopping. No improvement in color or growth rate that I can discern from my eyes either. Definitely got a huge increase in algae!

I'm not saying it can't work, but in my system it just adds unwanted and unnecessary nutrients. Also, I've not come across any scientific data suggesting coral need or use most AA's. There was one that triggered a feeding response.....hence polyp extension, but that does not mean the coral is using it for any other metabolic process.

I think.....just my opinion......AA's became very popular years ago in sports supplements and every other industry Is trying to market off popularity. Here is another problem I have. I definitely need AA's. But there is no reason to supplement because I eat food. Just because something is eaten or put into the water column does not mean it is utilized.
Check out reef2reef too. Some papers have been posted to prove the need, except they didn't!
