My mom learned the hard way why you MUST check your heater reguarly.

They came to visit me in Miami for a week during christmas.
She set the top off w/ a 5g jug, set the 7 day auto feeder, and changed the filters. On the way out the door she checked the heater and set it on 60 which would be fine for freshwater fish.
Well, dad came back in the house for a final check and turned the heat OFF.
As you know the weather in Little Rock has been dipping to and below freezing lately. You know where I am going with this.
They came back to find the water temp around 45 and all the fish lifeless, flat on the bottom of the tank. In her 200g tank she had 5 breeding pair of convicts, 3 full grown green severums, two full grown red devils, and a 16" placostomus. She had a heater in the tank butshe guess they either failed under the large temp swing or it had already failed from age (4-5years old)
She can't ever remember testing it after it was plugged up for the first time.

    CHECK YOUR HEATER!!!

Bless her heart. That's terrible! We check our's daily, usually a couple of times at least.
Good advise to take note of!
