Saturday last week I picked up a new coral from NSA. A Blue Ridge Coral (Heliopora coerulea). You know, one of the corals with the smooth surface that have been at NSA for forever. Well I broke down brought one home. I have always wanted one, but never actually bought one because there was just something else I wanted to buy and could not spend the extra money. So, on my trip to get another Actinic VHO I decided to go for it.

By the way it is not an SPS, it is an Octocoral (you know like softcorals). It and Organ Pipe coral (Tubipora musica) are some if not the only Octocorals that build a hard skeleton.

A pic... probably not the best but...

  2. The Blue Ridge that I have in the clam tank is one of the the few corals that have done really well. Mine has about doubles in size from a quarter piece that I don't eaven remember how I came by. I did not know that it was an octocoral - thanks for the information. That may explain why it has done better than the sps that I have tried in the tank.

The Blue Ridge is quite tolerant, but it does prefer higher temperatures then usual (around 84 degrees) and very high light. No need to worry though because you said yours is doing well.

Most of my information about it came from Eric Borneman's Aquarium Corals book. I love that book, it is paperback and very worn.

  4. Got a couple of pictures of my Blue Ridge that I remember I got as a rubble piece from H2Ocean back in the day.
