I've been learning about this hobby for 5 Yeats but have a lot to learn. I'm setting up a nano now and might need suggestions and advice. I candidate wait to get involved.

Thanks for the kind words. Like I said before, its a nano (pico?) 10 gallon standard. It will be a low to moderate light softie tank with a goby or two.

Right now I'm running an 800 gph power head and a terra hob power filter. I'm considering using the hang on back as a refugium by removing the filter media and replacing with macro algae. For other filtration I'm planning on adding a small sump and hob skimmer.

I only got all the live rock and everything set up on Wednesday, but I am reading ammonia at 3.0 ppm, so hopefully my cycle is starting. What are normal readings during the cycle?

If your wanting to add a sump you can eliminate all the hob filters and have everything filter through the sump. You can also have your fuge in one of the sump chambers and your skimmer down there. That way there's nothing hanging off the tank. Definitely the best way to go.

With that size tank, water changes would be just as effective as a skimmer, imo

I appreciate the feed back. I think you are right and I think that's what I may do in the long run. I'm going to start a build journal soon, so stay tooned.
