Hey everyone I am in a predicament of sorts. I have a 40 breeder that broke on the back panel of glass and was wondering if anyone wanted to try something with me and cut the tank down into a frag tank that that is only a few inches tall. If anyone is willing or has the equipment to do this would be great. We could even use it for club frag swaps so everything is in one tank.

Hmmm. Interesting idea. Does it have a frame? If so it would probably be easy to remove the frame and replace it after the cutting. I'd just take it to a glass shop. They have the necessary tools to do it right with the smallest chance of breaking it.

Yep it's a standard 40 breeder with the black framing. Anyone know a good glass shop around little rock?

Look up the king of DIY on you tube. He does several videos of glass cutting and aquarium making.

Thank you Deton8it for the idea to look up that "king of diy" I was inspired. I have now gone ahead and bought the things I need to complete this venture. It looks like it would be a simple task but a tad time consuming.

I will start with a new post to explain everything going on. pictures to follow of course. I took the tank and I took the panels off and started to clean them and I'm cleaning the panels now.

Here are the pictures I remembered to take of this build it was very cheap to do and I didn't have much trouble at all putting it together. We now must wait 48 hrs for the silicone to dry before I water test it. Nothing to it besides silicone glass some blood here and there and elbow grease to hold it together [emoji13]

Also if anyone has a drillbit to cut holes for a bulkhead that would be great if I could borrow it

I think you used the wrong silicone. I read somewhere that the mold free silicone is not reef safe. I was told that you want GE 1. You got GE 2. I'll see if I can find the article

    Aaron,

I sent you a Facebook request and that frag tank I was talking about may be more than I can handle.

Water test for now is a success! We shall wait a couple hours to ensure stability. Will get some of the seems cleaned off while it's wet then water test over night. What are some ideas others have I am think of buying an overflow box or drilling it. Anyone have thoughts on return pump and how to plumb? I will use a stock size stand and I'll have a sump made for it. Mainly modify the one I have to be better. I figure the best would be to soft plumb the return with a hose then have it go into a sprayer bar that I would make so I wouldn't need a powerhead, I have some but most are a little strong.

Well everyone this is the final product for the tank build until I start setting it up. Trimmed all the extra silicone off and tried the stand out again and I do say it looks good. All I need now is some coral after its up and going!

That looks great! Will you put the top rim back on? Will it be strong enough withour any bracing?

I am going to leave it unbraced for now. But I will wait and see, no bowing or flew I think I used more than enough silicone to make a big footprint to hold too
