I was told to rinse things like that in RO water.

I am not using my sponge as part of my biological filtration, I let my Live Rock & sand take care of this... so I rinse my sponge in tap water at the sink & shake dry - lots of people do this with no problems... unless you are wanting to make sure you are not killing any bacteria in the sponge.

I rinse mine several times a week & I think it helps keep down the nitrates.

imo it's fine to do & use your LR & sand for your biological filtration if you want to... [IMG]

You cannot sterilize a sponge by using tap water. It may remove some bacteria but millions or billions remain. If its your only source of biologic filtration you may wish to use sea water. If your tank is small you may wish to rinse with RO so no additional chlorine makes it into your tank. My 2 cents worth.

thanks I thought is was a big deal not to do it in tap, I have live rock and sand so it will have good bacteria in there too. Glad to know you can do it with out killing things learned something new.
    Thanks Glen
