I have some zoa's that are starting to branch out. Is it ok to prune these branches back? Pics below.

If you are talking about the long grey/black tubes those are sponges you can cut them off if you don't like the look of them.

    Yeah, the long gray/black tubes.

Interesting. I had no idea. I assumed they were part of the zoas. Are there any pros or cons to having sponges in the tank?

They help to filter the water and they don't hurt anything.

    They are "excellent" water filters!

Would it be safe to say that they would start to thrive more as the water became dirtier (more particulate)? Ive notived that these things have really started to take off only in the past month or two when my tank got a bit dirtier. Could that be?

Oh yeah! the dirtier the water the better for those sponges. The more food they get the better they will grow. I would leave them in the tank as I like sponges myself very good to have. But I wouldn't go adding more food to the tank just to get them to grow faster let them do their job filtering the water and don't start overfeeding or anything.

  8. +1 to the good advise above ^ harmless good filter feeders - they tend to self regulate too

Some fish especially angels will eat them also. I would leave them there. Not harmful at all.

My sponges thank you. I was about to hack them with a blade and you guys have saved their lives.

Sounds like they only do good things for my tank. I'll keep em.

Just a note about the sponges you have there. They look like the type I have seen grow to plague proportions! Keep them on that rock and trim them out side the tank.
