From all I have read the lighting in the QT tank should be subdued to make the fish feel more secure. I have had a Hippo tang in QT for about 6 weeks now and was just using the little cheesey incandescent lights that came with the 10 gallon kit. The Hippo would pretty much hide in the corner all day long. The bulb burned out and all I had was a 75 watt compact flourescent daylight bulb so I popped that in. The Hippo comes out and swims all over the place now. He seems happier with the new lighting.

So do the fish need good full spectrum lighting too?

Just thought I would share for you QT types out there.

  2. I am see pretty much the same thing James with an Mimic Eible Tang that I have in quarantine right now. I have just the regular cheesy bulb (white) that came with my 20 gallon start up tank and he has a perfect little cave in one of the dead corals that he sticks around pretty much all day. But when I turn the light off at night he tends to come out more and seems to feed better when there is just ambient light from the room lighting the tank. I am going to look for a cheap compact florescent and see if that helps with my case to. I usually feed during the day and he is hesitant to come out and feed. I will let you know how it goes.

It would probably be a good idea to use subdued lighting at first and slowly ramp up to a brighter light to get them accustomed to the lighting in our tanks before we "throw them to the wolves"
