I was wondering if anybody had any experience in raising butterflies. Sometimes people in the saltwater hobby have a love for other unusual hobbies. My niece is turning 3 this month, and I thought I would try to get her something outside of the box. I initially thought about turning an old aquarium into a really nice display, with plants growing inside it, but I have read that butterflies don't like glass. I didn't know if I could line 3 sides with netting, and it would be alright. I am also considering trying to build something she could walk into. There isn't much information online about this hobby, and didn't know if anybody on here knew of any resources that might could help me out.
Don't know about containment but we always plant certain types of flowers in our garden that attract butterflies. You could just make a butterfly garden.
Yeah, Death Head moth. Close as I could get. I've actually never heard of people raising butterflies so I look forward to seeing where this goes.
Haha, my wife's reading a magazine tonight and looks over and starts telling me about butterfly gardens. I think it's at www.savvykidsofarkansas.com
"Silence of the Lambs" may or may not be the reason that I got a degree in Psychology. I have tons of plants in my yard that attract butterflies. But the monarch butterfly population in the world is dwindling, so I'm wanting to use this as a teaching tool for my niece. She is turning 3, but pretty smart. She can actually name most of the corals in my tank. She knows the frogspawn, gonoporia, and acans. So I'm wanting her to watch from the life cycle of the butterfly from eggs, to caterpillar, to cocoon, to butterfly. And then I want to teach her about migration patterns, and how she's helping create something people in other countries will get to enjoy. My sister has an educational dvd series that my niece loves watching. It just so happens they've got one on monarch butterflies. So I am going to get that in addition with everything I need to get this started. The first thing I'm going to have to do is get some milkweed plants. It is the only plant that the butterfly will lay its eggs on. When the eggs hatch, the caterpillar uses the milkweed leaves as food. I also have a coworker out of the blue offer me a spice plant this week. It actually plays host to its own kind of butterfly. So maybe teaching my niece how to raise butterflies for her birthday is meant to be, instead of buying a toy.
I hate those! I always feed them to the chickens. They go nuts over those. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Hiya, Just BING Raising Butterfly kits and you'll get lots of websites to buy kits to do this. Kim/Benton, AR
A lot of the kits look cheap though to me. It's like you could just get a popup hamper and keep them in LOL. I dunno if it's the reefer in me, but I want to make a real habitat. I want my niece to be able to fit inside so she can visit the butterflies. Maybe I'm dreaming too big though lol.
