As I write this I just got a Sailfin Tang from NSA that is sitting in a bucket acclimating. I should get him in the Quaranteen Tank within the hour. I hope to get a picture of him up in a little bit. Waiting to get a new fish in the display tank is never easy.
I hope you keep us posted. I have tried twice to keep a sailfin in my system. Unfortunately, my lunar wrasse has killed one and would anything else that I would add. He will be moving to Normans soon.
Ohhhh, looked at a pic of one. Very pretty. Curious how big does he get? And just how fast do tangs grow in general? Thinking about a surgeon or something in the future.
They can get pretty good size. They have to have a large tank too, I think at least a 70? They are reef safe and add a lot of color, fun to watch too.
They have to have at least a 220 Gal (a ton of swimming space). They top out at a whopping 15 inches!!! Remember they are very active swimmers and enjoy swimming fast, long distances. But, I have had mine for a year and it has not out grown my 75 gal display. I have to remind myself that I have to get myself... ah I mean him a BIGGER display sometime. Which I will have no problem bringing myself to do.
Mine is medium sized, and will be a great excuse to need to upgrade my tank in the future. If worse comes to worse I always figure there is room in the Norman Ocean in Conway.
Nice, I take it that you've moved it to your display now. Sailfins have personality. Mine can tell the difference in me and my wife walking by the tank. All the other dumb fish swim up thinking she's gonna feed them. He only pays attention when i come up. And he has tried to cut me with it's bard when I had my hands in the tank to long. He and my purple tang race around the tank half the day through the different caves like some kids. Can't wait till it grows up. I named mine "The Flasher" He's always flashing his goods to bystanders. I wonder how many could you keep. I've seen people with schools of yellows. I guess it would be the same.
My Red Sea Sailfin is quite the character. If I am trying to take pictures it is trying to be in the picture. Eats from my hand and everything.
Yep, he is in the display now and everyone seems to be getting along. He got a slice into his fin the second day, looked like it was from the Coral banded shrimp, but it has healed nicely.
I just got a Sailfin from NSA that Norman got me in exchange for my Lunar wrasse. He is really doing well - there is a lot of Nori in my fish food that I feed but I was wondering how critical it is to supplement that with Roman lettuce or more Nori on a clip in the tank? I have tried a sailfin before only to have it disappear within a week - no trace.
I would go with the nori chris, for some reason I suspect there is some unknown compounds that help maintain good health. I also made my own Tang food in the past , a mix of broccoli, and romain. then I would microwave the greens to help break down the cell wall for easier digestion. After the microwave process is down add some selicon, then freeze into a freezer bag.
I believe so. At night I see him sometimes seem to go after my clownfish, but it isn't a very good effort. As for the sailfin, at night the Tang hangs out where the CBS likes hang out which is one of the reasons I suspect him. The other is that the CBS is the only think in my tank with a claw that could do damage I like saw on the tang.
