I'm looking forward to developing my knowledge of the reef tank. I recently converted my 55g planted tank into a saltwater tank. I have about 60+lbs of dry rock and live rock. Some of the rock had hitch hikers which include some colonies of feather dusters and a colony of mushrooms! My equipment: 55g tank 4x T-5 lights (2 10,000k x 2 actinic) marineland 350 biowheel second hang on back mechanical filter reef octopus skimmer quality wand heater 4 hermit crabs I'm looking forward to sharing info with you guys! Thanks! saltyhawg
Thanks! I wouldn't mind someone looking at my setup to make sure something isn't wrong. I'd also like to see other set ups which are successful
Hiya, Welcome to the group! Greg's tanks are a marvel to look at. Mine's still a work in progress. Hasn't even been set up for a year yet. Kim/Benton, AR
Glad to have you in the club! Keep us posted on how things are going and if you have any questions feel free to ask.
Thanks for the welcome guys! Mine's a week old. Converting from a planted tank aquarium. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
In the last 36 hours, I've had an explosion of brown diatoms or brown algae. It's covering all the edges of live rock that's exposed to high water flow. The dry rock is showing signs of spots as well as parts of the sand and equipment. I realize this is normal but do I need to cut down lights (2-10,000k and 2-actinic) for 10 hours. Or get some snails? Tank is 9 days old. I did a 15% water change yesterday. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Once they consume all the silicate it will resolve on its own. Decreasing your photo period will help a little. A few snails eat diatoms but I've never had them be very effective. This too shall pass.
I figured it would but I just wanted to make sure I didn't need to do something to help it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
People have mentioned to post progress: I re-scraped some to provide more spaces for fish to hide I'm noticing all kinds of growth on live rock. Feather dusters, mushrooms and other un-identifiable life. I now have a considerable amount of green algae that looks like short grass all over the place. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I cut back the lights over the weekend to only about 2 hours a day and there is only a fraction of algae left. I also only turned on 2 bulbs out of 4. I don't really need. All that light quite yet. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
