My skimmer does a great job on my 150 but it is loud. So I was thinking about replacing it with a dc pump like the skimz has on it. I have an atman ph4000 pump. Can I get a jebao dct4000 and expect similar performance without the noise? Does it work like that?

Is your skimmer a space saver(pump is in the skimmer) or is your pump connected to the sump with tubing?

If it's not a space saver type skimmer you can use any pump with about the same specifications. With a DC pump it wouldn't even matter if you had one that was a little "too powerful" as you could reduce it down to the level you need. It gives you an additional way to fine tune your skimmer.

If it's a space saver skimmer you have to have pretty much the same pump due to physical size and attachment issues.

it's a space saver and the pump was discontinued.

It's the bubble magus BM180EX. It had an atman ph4000 pump.

I bought it in May 2011. It functions perfectly but is just loud.

They don't list any other alternative pumps but the NAC9 used the same pump. If you can find a skimmer pump with the same dimensions I bet it would work. Says that pump pulls 1020 lph air.

Is there a piece of silicone tubing or something similar between pump and skimmer body? Is the skimmer on rubber/silicone feet (and pump?) If not to any of those may be a good place to start that would be cheaper than a new pump. Also - what about air intake? Any mufflers etc. there?

I contacted Seaside Aquatics and theyou said there was not a replacement pump available for it. I am investigating other options still. My first pump went out on it years ago. I was able to find one other one on eBay. so I snatched it up. It has functioned well but is noticeably louder than the previous pump. I've put up with it for years. It's a constant hum that can be heard from the next room over. It never really bothered me until I plugged the dc skimmer upstairs on my small system. I am tinkering with the idea of replacing the whole unit. I've had it for 5 years. I just kinda hate the idea of dropping hundreds of dollars on another one.

pump is attached to a volute which is connected to a silicone tube that connects to a stand pipe. Pump is mounted inside skimmer body on a bracket.

It's the skimz fault. The noise, or lack of did it. Is it vibration? Go to Bed Bath& Beyond and buy some food safe silicone mat. Place it under the pump and it should quiet it some.

Well I'm going to try to mod my existing skimmer. So I purchased a cheap jebao dct6000 pump. I'm going to modify the impeller with this needlewheel mod.

So for $110 it's worth a risk. I can always use the pump for my return if it doesn't work out with the skimmer. Wish me luck!

This new pump can't get here fast enough. It's getting so annoying listening to that hum! How have I put up with this all these years? The needlewheel mod was printed with a 3d printer yesterday and shipped today. I like how he designed it to mimic mesh. Looks pretty sturdy.

Well new pump arrived. I had to increase the hole size of the intake. I used a hole saw bit and carefully increased the hole. everything was a tight fit but it works. This pump is more quiet and the 3d printed impeller was easy to replace. Now is the test to see if it skims as well. It looks good so far.

I would have invested the $$$ in a nice Sicce skimmer pump, but mesh modded the DC should do just fine. As far as connecting it just be very aware of any air catches in the connecting hose. I used to do a lot of DIY and I'm interested to see some pics of what you are planning, likely a lot of others out there that are or will experience the same issue.

Took this picture this morning. Looks like I'm getting some pretty nasty skimmate.

I think I have it dialed in pretty well. I've double the skimmate output since this morning. It's still nice and dark.
