What determines nasarius snail activity?

I just restocked on 15 nasarius snails for my tank because I didn't seem to have many left and because my sand was looking compacted. I dumped in 15 of them and noticed they are super lazy. They don't come out at night when the lights go off like my old ones used to and very few of them come above the sand when I feed. The are still alive because I see their little snorkels above the sand but they just dont move much.

Does this mean that they have found so much good stuff in the sand to eat that they don't need to come up yet or is it something else causing them to be so lazy? Salinity, temp, other variables?

Anyone else have luck in getting these guys to do some more work and not be so lazy?

I call mine zombie snails cause they emerge from the substrate each time I feed. Mine are overactive if anything. They will pull mysis off my favia. Try adding a small scallop/shrimp on the sand and see if they come to it.
