I have had my battles with cyno before and it sure looks like there is some there. You need to give it a good blast or two as ibassfish suggests, I have found that if you blow it off every now and then it will help, but I try to stay away from chemical treatment if possible as it doesn't just kill cyno but all bacteria good and bad so if you use it I would use it as the last method of removal.Chemi clean does the job it is made for but I think your cyno can be treated without using it. Less feeding, more water flow and the turkey baster is what I would start with. What ever the cyno is feeding on is what you need to find out, so you will be able to adjust what is making it grow. Over time it may just starve itself out if you can find the cause for the outbreak. Well at least thats may two cents worth hope it helps.
The darker algae on the rocks is some type micro-algae (moss) I am guessing it is a bit fuzzy has only grown out from where there was coraline on some rocks. I just took a turkey baster & blaster it... did not effect it all all - zero - none. I have had cyano once in my sand when I was over feeding once - I bought & feed some Coral Frenzy & caused it... this is not the same, (a little Coral Frenzy goes a long way) I only feed what can be totally consumed in one minute, I am very careful to not overfeed. I guess it could be some form, but I run chemi pure elite, purigen, do 15% weekly water changes, don't overfeed & replace lights every six months - all the water parms all test perfect. I have wondered about it, I would call it more like a fuzzy/hairy growth on that has only grown from the coraline on some of the rocks. I took the turkey baster (which I use weekly to blow off everything before water changes) and tried to rub it off & could not rub off any of it, you can't blow off any of it... it is more of a very dark purple moss that has grown out of the corline. Any ideas, is it bad? Here a close up pic I just took... your thoughts?
Now you see why I am not a gambling man. Glad to see its not cyano, but sure looked like it in your pic due to the little air bubbles that were attached. I would post that pic on Reef Central and ask them what type of algae that is. I read on a thread this week of someone having some issues with a red macro. In that thread a few people noted nothing will eat it and it will take over. I am not sure that yours is that, but would be curious to find out.
Check out this thread: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1753186 Looks alot like what you have.
Wow..what a cool transformation! I can't wait to see our tank progress! Still in the beginning stages...patience.. patience..patience! Yours looks great! Jen
Thanks Jen ! I appreciate the nice compliment Ralph - Mexican Turbo snails rock !!! Wiped out the 99% red turf algae in two weeks, was amazing !
Glenn, you are doing a great job with that nano tank. I enjoy seeing it's progress. Can't wait till you take the plunge into the bigger redsea tank.
If anyone is interested in seeing some other Red Sea Max Tanks 130's & 250's ... here is some pics A Collection of Rea Sea Max Tank Pictures: http://www.reefsanctuary.com/forums/red ... tures.html
I think you have done an absolutely great job on those tanks. I would love to see what you could do with a 135 or so.
Wow! Awesome pictures and tank. Red Sea makes some great complete tanks, huh? They are coral growing machines!
